29.09.99 ================================================================ Title : Mel Soaring - Hear Me Roar BSP Name : alk02.bsp Author : Shaun Ross aka [Kona] Release Date : 29th September 1999 Email Address : alkali@ihug.co.nz Home Page : http://render-seed.cjb.net Map Description : Fortresses, canyons, warehouses, bases and a great challenge make up this large single player adventure! You conquered Quake, you defeated the Alkado World and are now in war with the Strogg. Control murderer Mel Soaring escape Earth and find a new home - defeating a Strogg leader and taking over it's base! Storyline : Your name is Mel Soaring, just an average soldier fighting the war against the Strogg. Or at least supposed to be fighting! So far you had spent all your days training and are getting very frustrated. All you want to do is kill! You hadn't even earned yourself a nickname yet! But your appetite for killing has got you in real trouble now. Earlier on that day you had visited Commander Tokay, asking him if you could join the next batch of soldiers heading for a Strogg planet. The answer was no. "Sorry soldier, but you have not yet proven yourself in the training ground," Tokay answers. That really pissed you off. "Those training grounds are shit!" you reply. "I wanna go kill some alien ass, not piss around on some stupid course!" Tokay looks a little offended, "The answer is NO! You've got another few months before you qualify to go anywhere. Now get out of my office, I've got things to do." Angrily, you rip your shotgun from your holster and aim it at his face. Tokay stumbles backward with a fearful look in his eyes. You suddenly realize that was a big mistake - your anger had taken control of your senses. After a sorry gulp you go to put your gun away when you hear the door open behind you. Before you even have time to turn around, shots are being fired. Diving to the floor you spin your shotgun around and blast the soldier in the chest. You look back at Commander Tokay to see him diving for his pistol. *blam blam blam* Your all alone. One soldier dead at the door, and Commander Tokay no longer recognizable after three shotgun blasts in the head. "Oh shit!" You run out of the office, now a murderer on the run. Commander Tokay was a very important man, he had led 'Operation Alien Overlord' against, what was thought back then, to be the main Strogg planet. Thinking about that terrible incident that morning, you are still inside the main building - trying to get out without being seen. As you hide in the shadows you clear your mind to suddenly hear talking. It is coming from a nearby room. As you look around, it appears to be coming from Marine Commandant Winston's office. He is talking to a marine, a very good one - it's the guy that fought in Operation Alien Overlord. One of Earth's greatest hero's, the man who took on Makron and beat him! Are they sending him on another mission? You get a little closer and try to listen in. "... have a good idea of where one of the main Strogg leaders is located. There is a small fortress hidden amongst a small base on the planet Meeylark. If there really is a Strogg leader situated there, then they will surely have great defences around this area that will stop any airstrike or full attack. Therefore we will only be sending you in..." Wow, this is my chance, you think. If only you can go to Meeylark instead of this stupid hero. You also catch that the mission will start tomorrow morning. The next day - 8.13am Your waiting by the launch pod for 'stupid hero' when he comes into the launch area. Great! you think - here's your chance. You dive out of the shadows and smash the tip of your shotgun against his head. He tries to jump backwards and pull out his pistol, but too late - you blast his brains away! The Quake2 hero is dead!!! Before anyone else arrives you quickly sprint to the console, and try to set the launch countdown. "What's all this shit! Where's the ANY key?" You punch your fists down on all of keys - one of them is sure to be the ANY key. As you wait for it to respond suddenly the countdown begins - at five seconds! You run as hard as you can and dive head-first into your pod just as it takes off. You manage to slam the pod door down but grit your teeth when you realize your stuck upside-down and, even worse, you left your rocket launcher and shotgun at the computer console! "Aww Crap! I gotta take on the Strogg leader with a blaster!" Other maps by Author : A couple of very short Doom2 levels made in 1998 with an awful level editor which would crash as soon as the level got too big! But of course, my two levels are still my personal all time favourites for Doom :P - Good Things Come To Good People - Royal Sacrifice Mid 98 - The Alkado Adventure Episode of seven new levels, new textures, skins, weapons and all new sounds and was featured in 'The Quake Bible' cover CD (by PC Powerplay). However Mel Soaring is much better than any of those levels. I hardly bothered learning Worldcraft, and it does have some errors (I don't think it works 100% in OpenGL - which I never tested it in) Other Info : If you play this map you are required by law to email me and tell me what you think. That way I'll know if I should make more levels - although I've already started work on a sequel :P Look out for Mel Soaring 2 at your local Half-Life site - I'm already halfway through making it and I like it heaps better than this level. NO Deathmatch Play : Well I added a bunch of deathmatch starts, but items are lacking... Difficulty Settings : Easy-86 Medium-99 Hard-106 I think maybe this is a little hard - I played it on medium and died several times! (although I was in 'run-through-looking-for-errors' mode) * MAP Information * Solids : 1978 Faces : 11707 PointEntities : 534 SolidEntities : 104 Brushes : Entities : New Textures : No New Enemies/Sounds : No New Weapons/Quakec : No * Construction * Base : From Scratch Construction Time : Started 28.08.99, finished three weeks later - about 100 hrs Build programs : Qbsp3, Qvis3, Qrad3 Build Time : QBSP3 - 46 sec QVIS3 - 45079 sec, 12.5 hours! (level 4) QRAD3 - 2553 sec, 43 min (-extra) Total - 13.2 hours Compile machine : P3 450mhz, 128mb RAM, Riva TNT2 Editor used : Worldcraft 1.6a Known Bugs : Can't load sound/misc/trigger.wav at start - I've seen this on levels before, dunno how it got there, but it doesn't effect the game as far as I can tell. There is no trigger.wav in the Q2 Pak, and I certainly didn't link to it. Also there is a Gunner stuck in the ground at the end - this is because I didn't want him to move, and couldn't be bothered setting targets etc. Therefore it's not really a bug, since it was intended. Unfortunately, there is Gunner that likes to get sucked up by a fan and gets stuck. It's better though with him staying still as there's not much room to run away! That's why I kept him there :) * Copyright / Permissions * You may NOT use this level as a base to build additional levels! You may distribute this BSP in any electronic format (BBS, Internet, PC/Game Mag cover-CD, etc) but you MUST inform me before you do this.
